Artist convo week 13

Gallery: CSULB School of art
Artist: Alive Andreini
About the Artist
Spacial illusions is her inspiration and she said that she doesn’t get inspiration from beauty. Landscapes effect the color choice and the neutrals make tension. She said that a muted pallet she could focus on structure. She is inspired by the questions she has and she is completing her mfa here at the moment. Her art is a critique of the picture. For example a golf course was her space and reduce it as much as possible.

Formal Analysis
She says that she always has one singular viewpoint and sees specific problems. She loves to use her choices and color to shift her work and transform it into something different than what she originally planned. She decided to go with her strength which was drawing. She likes to only see what is possible, not what she wants. So basically she follows her brain and not her heart. Which is, of course, totally okay.

Content Analysis
The artist says that she views her art as a way to show culture in America, which I understand but at the same time I do struggle with trying to find how a golf course is a depiction of American culture. Or how gray, black, and white lines on a canvas is symbolic of politics.

Synthesis / My Experience
I was fortunate enough to be in a lecture with the artist of the exhibit, which was pretty cool. But I have to say that at some points I seemed to wonder what she was talking about. I personally felt that it was more about the different textures that drew my eye. They seemed to be popping out of the canvas and showing different layers, not showing different forms of culture.

She is from Cerritos and is a big fan of sushi and poke. Her favorite color is light light pink and she also takes college very seriously. She is really liking sorority so far and likes to shop at pacsun and target.

Gallery: CSULB School of art
Artist: Yujia Gu
About the Artist
Yujia had a dream to study here in the United States but there was an issue of worry. He and her mother were scared of the gun violence in America. She was taught the real horror in America today.

Formal Analysis
She wants people to realize that it is a big big problem and she did a great job. She told about how people in schools and large buildings are the most at risk for gun shootings. It scared me when I heard that because we are at risk every single day we go to school.

Content Analysis
She told the story of how when people see children, they are much more vulnerable. She showed true children that have been killed by gun violence. Especially when you are given a statistic, you can put it into perspective just how impactful messages like this are.

Synthesis / My Experience
I got the privilege to see something so true in the world. It’s sometimes hard to discuss the real problems in our world today. I got the opportunity to see facts. I am so happy I got to put this into perspective.

Week 11 artist convo

Gallery: CSULB School of art
Artist: Amy Duran
About the Artist
She is a senior here at csulb and her exhibit is about her own problems about never feeling like she fits in. She said she had anxiety for a long time and felt like she lost her inner child. The exhibit alone shows the representation of a child that forgets how to be a child. She is lost in an inner world of sin and evil.

Formal Analysis
She said she wanted to embrace her sexuality as a women, which is how she “lost her inner child.” She wants to remind people that you can be an adult and still be afraid of what’s to become and what is beyond. When you’re an adult you don’t receive the same affection you get as a child.

Content Analysis
She says that we should remember our childhood memories and memorabilia. It will remind us to be innocent and not to dive into things that could eventually hurt us in the long run. Take what you learn from your childhood and make it to who you will become in the future.

Synthesis / My Experience
Overall I really really enjoyed this art exhibit. It was so amazing and fun to experience in person. It made me think about the sins that I have committed in my life and how I should remind myself sometimes of the innocent child I was not long ago. I wish I could tell her how much her art impacted my life.

Week 11 art activity

IMG_6716.JPGThis week we got to do something that I was was pretty cool. This is an actual problem that is happening around our school so it was cool that we got to solve the problem in some way. I decided to solve the problem by creating another a lot since there is already a little crack. We could make little signs to let people know that there is an in way and there is an out way. This would basically be like the flow of traffic so that people would be familiar. Since tons of college kids drive anyways this should be pretty familiar to them and this would solve the problem. I thought this was cool because it’s an actual problem that happens on campus so I liked that we got to make it so it wasn’t a problem. At least in our minds. Haha.

Week 10 art activity

This project was by far the hardest for me so far. All of the accessible cardboard I had was too small to be able to outline anything in spray paint. So my sister and I got creative. I had to trace my name out onto the board, then paint the design that I wanted, then cover the board with clear tape, take an exacto knife to carve out the take outlining the letters, then finally spray the inside of the letters and take off the tape. I know it isn’t exactly what was assigned but I believe that I took my own spin on things. I’m pretty happy with how the result turned out and I might even want to do it again to make a better one I’m not sure. It did take a very very long time to do but I did enjoy being pushed a little bit and my sister also tagged along too. She made her own fun design on a small piece we had leftover. This class is a fun way for me to bond with my family while doing my school work so I would really like to thank you for this.
